A little frustrated. I’m in my senior year as a social work and taking a second language is required to graduate. I’m in Spanish 201 and the professor says we should be speaking fluently in class. It’s like we’re not Spanish majors also we only retain this information for the class. If we’re not talking in Spanish 24/7 how can we retain the information

Colleges are like this. They expect you to know things that you were either never taught or don't like. I study in an IT department and it's full of mathematics. I know that they are usefull for IT but there are things such as probabilities which are pissing me off. I don't get how we're going to use probabilities in the future, or in that case probability distributions etc, but we have to study it. The thing is that the professor there teaches us math that he expects us to already know and as a result 75% of the people there fail his subjects. It's truly his fault cause he doesn't care. He simply wants to just speak and get paid later. As a result, we're all alone, trying to do figure out what the **** is going on with him and math in general. What I am trying to say is that college doesn't really seem to care about what subjects are useful or not or what you like or not. At some point, we all had a subject that we aren't even going to use. And I am sure that your professor doesn't really expect anyone to speak fluent spanish and just wants to motivate you to study more. I've seen multiple professor do this and it's a really effective way to bait the students.

that's how I honestly feel like they're baiting us. Last semester I had a professor tell me by the time we finish we'll only be able to speak like a kindergartener. I've also had coworkers tell me what we're taught in school is totally different than what or how they actually speak.

@Tiffany8908 When you’re in college, you’re basically on your own. Unlike school where they used to teach you things, in college they just give you what you have to study. So basically you have to find your own way of studying a subject, your own sources etc. Also that’s based on my experience and that may not always be the case, but your professor’s attitude is similar to my math professor. So yeah don’t give a damn basically and you’ll be fine  .
