Bipolar questions

Hey everyone I have a couple of question about bipolar. I have a friend with bipolar and I just what to learn more about bipolar. What is bipolar, I know with bipolar you have your highs and lows but to me everyone has highs and lows, so what is the difference? Can children have bipolar? What's the difference between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2? If anyone can answer my questions that be great thanks.

princess honey i have the perfect website for you to go to for all the info you need as well as resources and extra support along with support groups here is nami.org....national alliance for mental illness....there may be a chapter near you to actually go to a meeting and talking with others. meetings have consumers as well as family and friends of those with mental illness both my mom and daughter have bipolar its been a tremendous help.

Thanks Kathy I will definetly will check out that website.

oh please do hun, you won’t be sorry and if you can attend a gathering its even better talking with people in person. saved the lifes of me and family members.

I was dx w/bi-polar (along with other things) when I was 12. There are highs and lows, but with bp they are excessive- the highs can be to the point where a person w/bp doesn't need sleep, does very impulsive things, feels 10 ft tall and bullet proof and that feeling can last for days. The lows get to the point of suicidal depression, staying in bed all day for days and basically not being able to function. Both of these areas of the roller coaster can be debilitating. It's not only hard for the person w/bp--but so difficult for the ones around the person.
It's very impressive that you care enough about your friend to find these things out and be able to understand--most people don't.

princess....

Here is an interesting article I have found on www.webmd.com (just love that site) I am a medical asst and I love going to learn more here. Alot of useful info

Anyway I thought I would share. Your friend is lucky to have a friend like you

B1ckr thanks for sharing and thanks for explaining bipolar to me, I understand what bipolar is more so now, i love learning about different disorders and I feel if you understand it more then you can help and support people better and I really want to help and support my friend that has it and also support people on here that may be diagnosed with it. Xoxo thanks so much for the website I will check that out.

Well princess you know you can get a hold of me anytime and like I've said, I'm pretty much an open book (not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing). ;-)

hi i believe my daughter has got bipolar shes 25 but is like a child in an adults body any help would be appricated please

yeah the doctor has this famous drawing he gives for bipolar highs and lows. but the major difference is....everybody gets highs and lows but for bipolar people its 100times more intense and there often is no reason. you get depressed for days-weeks and then manic for days-weeks but for no external reason. and it's either depression or mania...never normal or in between. and mania and depression have certain symptoms like the way it affects sleep, eating, energy levels, impulsiveness, social behaviour ect

yeah they say children get bipolar but it appears to look different in children than adults. like adhd too. adult adhd symptoms are different.

difference between bipolar 1 and 2 is that in the one mania is worse than the depression. and in the other depression is worse. you also get cyclothymia which is a milder form of bipolar and the mania and depression is about the same intensity.

but i agree webmd explains it best....
