Bulimia's Deadly Binge/Purge Cycle

Bulimia's Deadly Binge/Purge Cycle
What to look out for
by Maureen Battistella

SO WHAT IF YOU THROW UP A LITTLE AFTER EATING?

Well, it's a serious problem if you are female, 13 to 20 years of age and it happens consistently over the course of a couple of months. You could be bulimic and end up in the hospital with esophageal bleeding, infected glands, cardiac arrhythmias and electrolyte imbalances.

And this isn't just a "big city" problem. It can take place right here in our small community. That's what happened to Jennifer's high school friend, Allie (not their real names). "Allie was beautiful, one of the prettiest girls I've ever known, absolutely gorgeous," says Jennifer. And over the course of a year or so of covert binge eating, vomiting and laxative abuse, Allie was reduced to a bag of bones with terrible teeth. "I remember her saying it was triggered by a boyfriend who said she was fat, then she started doing some modeling and everything all together triggered it — she was 5 feet 7 inches and 90 pounds."

Eating disorders, including bulimia and anorexia, are mysterious diseases. The reasons why some women are more susceptible to eating disorders than others are not fully known, but may have to do with self-esteem, feelings of self-worth and coping skills. "There's a feeling of being out of control, of needing to be nurtured, reassured," notes Providence Medical Group pediatrician, Dr. Lisa Miller. "There's poor self-esteem and there's often some kind of dysfunctional family environment. There's usually some kind of extra stress on the person."

The bulimic's vomiting and/or laxative use is a consequence of binging, her way of avoiding the weight gained by compulsive eating. Jennifer saw this when Allie stayed the night: "I remember waking up and oh my god, everything was gone," she recalls. "The whole chocolate cake was gone, the whole bag of Doritos was gone and all the milk was gone." And, Jennifer says, the bathroom needed a good cleaning.

The typical bulimic has a normal body type, perhaps slightly overweight, at least in the early stages of the disease. As the bulimia progresses, her hair becomes brittle, her skin gets dry and flaky and her knuckles are red and scarred from forced vomiting.

"She's usually a depressed person, has a very reserved affect and a sad appearance," explains Dr. Miller. "The parents will bring them in because they're sleeping all the time or they were dizzy and fainted at school or they've got muscle aches." It can take up to three months to test for medical problems that mimic bulimia and just as much time to gain the young woman's trust.

Eating disorders can be deeply rooted and are not easily resolved. Effective treatment will involve a multidisciplinary team that includes the physician, psychotherapist and nutritionist who work with the young woman and her family. Frequently, antidepressants are prescribed to relieve anxiety and help manage the harmful behavior.

Loren Fogelman is a therapist with Kolpia Counseling of Ashland and Medford and has experience treating women with eating disorders. "Part of what I do is to increase their motivation to want to look at a behavior that is a problem for them," says Fogelman. "I help to reaffirm the healthy aspects of what they're doing well, focus on positives and really listen to what they want to do, and support the healthy decisions that they feel ready to make."

Healing can be a very long journey. "People are always recovering, so if they're not practicing good self care they can relapse into bulimia again," Fogelman explains. "Progress is based on having longer periods of time without a bulimic episode and if they do have it, it is shorter in duration."

Today, almost 10 years later, Jennifer and Allie have grown apart, but Allie's still around and has gained some weight back.

Jennifer learned a lot about bulimia from her high school friend. She saw that often people don't know what to make of someone's changing appearance or eating patterns. "Usually people deal with it by making little jokes," says Jennifer. "They kind of make light of it [your appearance or behavior] and it's not helpful." More than anything, Jennifer saw that ignoring unhealthy behaviors won't make them go away.

What does help? Jennifer's quiet for a long while, and then says softly, "People being there, kind of surrounding you. Loving you and accepting you and just acknowledging that you're there."

What Are the Warning Signs?
A young person is more likely to recover from bulimia if it is diagnosed and treated early, before harmful binge/purge behaviors are established. The National Eating Disorders Association says to watch for these warning signs and if you suspect an eating disorder in yourself or someone you love, get help.

Evidence of binge-eating, including disappearance of large amounts of food in short periods of time or the existence of wrappers and containers indicating the consumption of large amounts of food.
Evidence of purging behaviors, including frequent trips to the bathroom after meals, signs and/or smells of vomiting, presence of packages of laxatives or diuretics.
Excessive, rigid exercise regimen — despite weather, fatigue, illness, or injury — the need to "burn off" calories taken in.
Unusual swelling of the cheeks or jaw area.
Calluses on the back of the hands and knuckles from self-induced vomiting.
Discoloration or staining of the teeth.
Creation of complex lifestyle schedules or rituals to make time for binge-and-purge sessions.
Withdrawal from usual friends and activities.
In general, behaviors and attitudes indicating that weight loss, dieting and control of food are becoming primary concerns.

Reham, you are so strong and so positive, you help so much of us here with all of your incredibly important and informative posts. I know that you will beat bulimia; I have no doubt about it. I am here for you and here to help you through this.

Good morning my sister Puppy dof lvr :)

I hope i can make it like others, iam acting positivly, and trying to be strong, but the problem is that i live alone, as my husband work 5 days out of the cist and spent 2 days only with me, it is ok, but i have long time to spend thinking of food :)

Yesterday one of my new babys cats died yesterday:( i cried for 10 minutes, then i told my self 4 babys are not bad :)

Today i brought 2 cheese sandwiches for breakfast. and vegies and meat and some rice for lunch.

I hope i can start over and not binge again.

wish me lluck, and it would help me if you advised me with soem tipps to avoid eating and vomiting.

Thanks dear..kisses..xoxoxo

Hey Reham, I can totally understand your situation. the binge purge cycle is a very nasty one and one i can very well relate with. it has made me become very isolated from society and being out with my mates and family on social occassions. even when eating out gets me by suprise, my anxiety creeps and the binge/purge cycle becomes worse. However i have been so stressed out with anxiety that my appetite has disappeared and i have started to be scared of eating some foods that will encourage the cycle to occur.

what i have found to work in the past is to just allow yourself one thing to eat every couple of hours. I find drinking something like a milk drink helpful, one it does line your stomach and two it's really good nutrients if you make a smoothie. i have now avoided eating a lot of foods that remind me of really bad binge/purge days, just incase it triggers it again. I find that if i'm out, I only allow myself a couple of dollars to take to work so i don't end up spending a huge amount of $$ on food and then purging it. Perhaps this may work for you?

Tina

Dear Tina Anne, i oved your both advices:
1- To allow some foods only and drink milk products like smothies.

2- to take few money.

I will do both, because i spent thpusands of food that ended in the toilet, and when i think of poor people who can not buy a bread to eat...i feel so sick :(

Thanks my new friend.

I wish u a wonderful day..xoxoxo

same here.. i spent insane amounts of money on food that i flush. its so sad and upsetting.

i refrained by b-p yesterday as i mentioned simply b-c i was flying.. as soon as i got some alone time here i immediately ordered room service and b-p. i donºt know why i canºt stop the obsession.

it scared me reading of all the side effects of bulimia. why isnºt it enough to get me TO STOP THEN?

i have 2 young kids that need their mom. iºm not setting any kind of example. sooner or later they will undoubtedly find my head over the toilet and what on earth will i tell them

they, like everyone else, think i am the epidomy of health. what a fraud i am.

tomorrow is a new day. i will try to do better. thank goodness i am working otherwise i would be mindlessly obsessing about binge foods.

i understand completely how you get into the trap of overeating when your husband is away raheem.

puppydoglvr '' -- hello. u r still my idol of getting of this disease. one day it will be a miracle if i can write the same in a post.

cheers and peace with our bodies.
caroline

Hi Reham, I am so sorry to hear about your loss, though you are so right, you have the blessing of four sweet babies, which is such a gift. I understand how feeling lonely and being away from your husband is difficult. I am alone quite a bit, and I am actually alone more than I am with others. What helps me through my loneliness is to find activities and hobbies [outside of work] that occupy my time in a fulfilling and positive way. Do you have any hobbies or activities that you do when you are on your own? Do you have family and friends nearby who you can spend time with?

How was your day yesterday? Were you able to be binge-free?

I hope that you are happy and smiling today! Wishing you a beautiful day!

Dear justme 40,

please order fresh orange juice and alot of milk and fruits, if u did that u will never gain a kilo so no worries and u will not end up in the toilet.

try to go swimming, taking a sunbath, and massage, this will keep ur mind busy.

Spend more time with ur man in bed;)))

Order fruits only, i hope u can make it.

stay strong and love ur self honey..kisses xoxoxo

My beloved puppydoglvr,

iam better now, and did not vomit yesterday, if i calaculated all the days they will be 3 weeks but we need to take to days of them in which i relapsed.

It is a proof top my self that i can stop vomiting, this is good.

i was a swimmer from the age of 4 till 10, after that i joined the volley ball tem from 10 to 17 and joined the national team of egypt for 4 years:)

I was very sporty , working out for 5 hours daily :)

at 17.5 i joined the faculty of ducation "the german department" so i needed to quitt of working out in order to be the best in my faculty and i was, i got also a scolar chip to germany in 2007 , i love germany :)

i kept going to the gym, but now i donot,

i spend 9 hours at work and 3 at the railway, so i have 7 hours to sleep and the rest for my cats and house:(

only weekend which is sat and sundays, my husband come to me, so i wanna spend all the time with him ;)

so the only possibility is to work out at hom e or buy a machine, and i am thinking to buy a bike at home..

let us see..

kisses dear.

i hope u r fine.

which activitied do u do?

Reham, you are truly Super Woman, wow! I can't believe what a busy schedule you have and you still have such a wonderfully positive and beautiful attitude and outlook. I just adore you :-)

I think that if you can do something active with your husband on the weekends, then you will feel good because you are spending time together and also being active. Can you go for a walk or hike near your home? Maybe a bike ride?

I like to run and walk, though I have also started working out at the gym too. I try to work-out during the day during my break from work. Is this a possibility for you? Would you be able to work-out during your break at work?

Wishing you a beautiful day full of happiness and smiles :-)

My beloved sister, thanks you for your nice words.

I live in cairo it is over crowded here :D

The only [possibility too run is at 5 am near to my house or anytime at the sport club.

We can not ride a bike because of the thousands of cars that go slowly in all streets:(

I love biking, so much.

So i can take my husband for a walk maybe for 2 hours, i did it yestrday with him, it was nice :D

or i need to wait till 8 pm and go to the sport club after my work.

I have only 1 hour break devided into 15 min, 30 min for luch and another 15 min, so no chance to leave the building:The german call centre that iam working at' :D

thank you again for thinking of me xoxoxo

Reham, I am so happy to hear that you and your husband took such a nice long walk together, how wonderful. I totally understand your challenges with working-out during the work day, so implementing it when and how you can [without adding stress to your life] is the best way to go. And, you did just that by taking a nice walk with your husband, as you got both good exercise and spent quality time with your husband. That's so wonderful!

Good Morning Schatzi "Sweety"in German" :)

I will walk more and more with friends, and husband.

It is healthy to change my life style, and abandone the car and the bus and walk :)

Iam drinking green tea since 2 days, and i believe it controled my apetit.

i have a problem now, i own 8 cats"4 adults and 4 babys"

3 friends will take 3 babys, so i have 4 dults and 1 baby left.

I want to keep only 2 adults and 1 baby,

so iam searching for a shelter to take my other 2 adults, but they are in a good health and shape, so no shelter took them, as they take only the emergency cases :D

I hope i will find a solution soon, i spend a lot of money on them, milk, salamon, and whiskas;)

kisses dear xoxoxo

Schatzi, I absolutely love it! Thank you! I think that you are doing everything right, you have such a great outlook and attitude. One of my close girlfriends and I used to meet for coffee to catch-up, but now we go for a long walk and talk instead. It's really wonderful and a great form of exercise. Also, green tea has so many health benefits, I am so happy that you are drinking it and it's helping you along.

In regard to your cats, can you ask people around your neighborhood and at work, as well as friends if anyone knows anyone who would like to adopt?

Wishing you a magnificent day Schatzi!

In Egypt many people treat animals like stones, they beat them starve them :(((

They are cruel.

They have the openion, take care of any poor person is better than a dog or animal. :(

It is so sad.

Although in all religions God stated the importance of mercy to all creatures.

I made an advertisement 1 week ago.

3 friends will take 3 babys.

and one of the house keeping man in my building loves cats so he will take one adult cat.

so i have 3 adults and 1 baby.

I will keep 2 adults"the father and mother" and their last baby.

So i need only one person to take the last adult cat"she is 1 year old"

so iam happy, that God is helping me.

Thank you dear :)

Reham, that is so incredibly sad about how animals are treated, and that's why they are so fortunate to have a loving person like you to make sure that they are placed in good homes. I love animals so much; they are such a joy and happiness. I know that you will find a very good home for the last adult cat.
