Childhood Nutrition Act

I think that this is an important bill that's passed concerning children's healthy eating and expands free lunches, what do you think?

"President Obama signed the first lady's childhood nutrition bill into law Monday.

Obama, joined by Michelle Obama at Harriet Tubman Elementary School in Washington, hailed the legislation as "vitally important to the health and welfare of our kids and to our country."

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is a $4.5 billion plan that expands free lunches and makes school lunches more nutritious.

Healthy eating and combating obesity are some of Michelle Obama's signature issues.

The president joked that had he failed to pass the bill, the first lady would have punished him...."

I think you Americans are on the right track :)

Absolutely! I think that our government had to step in to instill healthy eating, as it wasn't happening on its own.

call me a sceptic but i dont think a bill will educate those who genuinely dont understand nutrition

if a young mother feeds her child cereal for breakfast and burger and chips for dinner with a nice snack tea they think they are doing it right so how will the bill enhance healthy eating exactly?

Educating those who dont understand nutirion should start in the home at an early age but unfortunately thats not the case so its left to teachers to do..

lilac

i agree it should start at home but it often doesnt we see it time and time again at group

i dont know what the answer is but i agree we do need to find one

Most definitely Domestic! I think that the more we try to bring attention and awareness, then hopefully more and more education regarding healthy eating will be implemented in school programs.

ok so we have spent a fortune on educating those who want to listen but what about the rest, the world is gettin wider as we speak but its so hard to motivate them to see the positives when they dont see the bigger picture

i despair of getting thru to some of them

I agree that kids should be learning many things from their parents, including nutrition and proper eating. However, as may of us know, parents don't always treat their children the way they should. At least with this bill, kids will have a better opportunity to get a least one proper meal each day. Even the kids that do know a little about healthy eating don't have a chance when the school lunch consists of over-processed chicken nuggets, potato chips, candy or ice cream and soda. I really hope this bill forces schools to get rid of candy and pop machines and to provide higher quality as well as healthier food.

our schools have done away with pop and sweets but u would be suprized at how many mummies turn up at the school gates with candy for the little ones....

so i guess here in england we are reinforcing how to do a days work and then splurge on sweets, chocs etc at the end of it not quite the idea in mind

Planemo, that's such a great point. In hopes that the one proper nutritious meal that children will have will hopefully teach them to apply this to other meals down the road.
