I've been put on a waiting list for DBT. I'm excited about it.
I'm wondering if anyone on here has been through this?
Does it work?
I've read a ton of reviews and I'm convinced. I don't know when I'll start but it can't happen soon enough!
Catch-22, I don't have direct experience with DBT, though I am really happy that you have the opportunity to go through it. Most especially since you have such a positive outlook and attitude about it. Please let us know how it progresses for you.
Hi Catch-22!
I think it's awesome that you are going to start DBT! I go to group therapy Wednesday nights where we learn DBT skills and i find it to be extremely helpful! I think you'll really like it. They're skills that you can use for a lifetime and they really do work!
Best of luck!!
Hi Aspire, would you mind my asking how its helped you? thank you!
I don't mind at all!
It's helped in many ways..
1. It helped me learn self compassion. I'm not as hard on myself and I've learned to change negative judgement into positive facts.
2. I can stay focused (one-mindfully: in the moment). That helped a lot with recovering from my eating disorder since i could focus just on that one meal i was eating right then and there and not worry about the next meal.
3. i can identify and label emotions. I was so used to just numbing out my feelings when i was really struggling with my ED, so it helped to actually recognize what i was feeling and accepting it. Not trying to push negative emotions away and hold on to the positive ones.
4. I learned to have a nonjudgemental stance towards things and myself.
5. I've learned to have radical acceptance towards myself. I don't hate myself if i do something "wrong" and i'm able to focus on the positive things about myself instead of punishing myself.
6. I've learned to engage in pleasant activities. I always used to do school, work out for hours, and sleep and that was it. I've started doing thiings with friends and whenever i work out its always with someone and i always enjoy doing it!
There's alot more but those are just a few!!
Wow, that is absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It just shows how incredibly successful DBT can be. I am really so very happy for you.
WOW!!!!!!! That is so awesome! Everything that you have improved on is something I struggle with! I'm so happy for you Aspire! You brought tears to my eyes knowing there is hope;) Thank you for responding. Also thank you to puppydoglvr for reaching out to Aspire;) I see why you are number 1 one the top supporter list! Keep it up! Again, thank you both for the inspiration;)
Catch-22, you are far too kind, thank you so much for your sweetest words, they made me smile from cheek-to-cheek.
Aspire, how are you doing and how are things progressing for you now? Just checking in. Hope you are well.
I am in the third module of DBT. It has been really helpful. I am going to hopefully repeat some of the modules to get even more help. If I was not in DBT I know the situation on the bridge a little over a week ago would have landed me in the hospital if I was not in DBT. The skills I am lessening helped a lot.
Tools, it's so amazing how much DBT has helped you. This is such important information and knowledge to have and to share with others, because if it's helped both you and Aspire, then I can imagine how many others it can help.
I HAVE BEEN IN DBT IT HELPS YOU DEAL AND THINK THROUGH THE ISSUES BEFORE YOU OVERREACT BUT THIS ONLY HELPS AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THROUGH WITH WHAT YOUR TAUGHT GOOD LUCK
Thank you to everyone who has responded. I'm still on the waiting list and excited for this to start! I looked at a website (the name escapes me now) that was writen by people with borderline and have been through dbt. Its exciting stuff! Again, thank you for everyones responses.
Catch-22, I am so happy for you and the opportunity that you have to go through DBT. I really look forward to your updates once you start the program. We are always here for you.
I am in DBT, by far the most productive and effective therapy I have had.
images was right on the money. dbt can be incredibly helpful. what's important is what u put into it though. it's just like taking any other sort of class, like dance. you can learn all about the choreography, training, and so forth, but if you don't practice all the moves, you'll never master it...and you won't get the most out of your class. same goes with dbt. you really have to do the exercises...and, they're not easy. in fact, some of the first few had me wanting to tear my hair out...it can feel a little tedious and irrelevant at first...but i stuck with it, and i am really glad. u'll learn a lot about yourself, and u'll learn tools that come in good use in lots of situations...not just during those manic bpd moments. i think i need to listen to my own advice and pull out my workbook...i think i'm due for a little practice!
best of luck! and, keep us posted!
