Facts About Alcohol Poisoning

Excessive drinking can be hazardous to everyone's health! Some people laugh at the behavior of others who are drunk. Some think it's even funnier when they pass out. But there is nothing funny about the aspiration of vomit leading to asphyxiation or the poisoning of the respiratory center in the brain, both of which can result in death.
Common myths about sobering up include drinking black coffee, taking a cold bath or shower, sleeping it off, or walking it off. But these are just myths, and they don't work. The only thing that reverses the effects of alcohol is time-something you may not have if you are suffering from alcohol poisoning. And many different factors affect the level of intoxication of an individual, so it's difficult to gauge exactly how much is too much (BAC calculators - http://www.ou.edu/oupd/bac.htm ).
Critical Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning
* Mental confusion, stupor, coma, or person cannot be roused.
* Vomiting.
* Seizures.
* Slow breathing (fewer than eight breaths per minute).
* Irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths).
* Hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness.

What Should I Do If I Suspect Someone Has Alcohol Poisoning?
* Know the danger signals.
* Do not wait for all symptoms to be present.
* Be aware that a person who has passed out may die.
* If there is any suspicion of an alcohol overdose, call 911 for help. Don't try to guess the level of drunkenness.

What Can Happen to Someone With Alcohol Poisoning That Goes Untreated?
* Victim chokes on his or her own vomit.
* Breathing slows, becomes irregular, or stops.
* Heart beats irregularly or stops.
* Hypothermia (low body temperature).
* Hypoglycemia (too little blood sugar) leads to seizures.
* Untreated severe dehydration from vomiting can cause seizures, permanent brain damage, or death.

thanks again for sharing really important information. i remember all the craziness in college and no one explained that when you throw up from drinking you are not avoiding alcohol poisoning, but that is alcohol poisoning. this is good for everyone, especially teens and kids in college.

Thanks for the facts... very useful...

sorry i dont know if this is the right place to ask this but i always tend to get very drunk when i go out and end up vomiting 90% of the time,but is there a possibility that i just have a weak stomach???or is it just really bad for me?ps i know i shouldnt be doin it and am tryin to stop

bluidkiti, Thank you for posting this, As we approach graduation season it is really important for kids and parents know this information. I am actually going to take this and share this on my son's FB if you don't mind. He is graduating this year and I am so worried about what these kids might do as they graduate. He is a good kid and the kids he hangs around are good. His graduating class is small but I know how peer pressure works. So again thank you for sharing this.

victoria 1981 thanks,no its never after 1 or two,i can't seem to stop after that amount anyhow,its like i never feel drunk enough and i just keep going,i havent really gone out in a while(exams) but its always the same story,plus my dads an alcoholic and i heard it can be hereditary so im worried,i really feel like its just something that happens me once i start i really cant stop,think my friends are getting worried too,i dont want to end up like him

anonnnnnnn - i think that alcoholism can be hereditary or increase the risk in children. Its good that you are aware of the problem and want to fix it. You should see if there are any AA meetings in your area or a doctor that you can talk to to help you through this.
