My Mom was recently diagnoticed with early stage diabeties at the age of 66. She is doing everything she is supposed to do or at least trying. She is taking her meds, monitoring her blood surgar, learning how to eat right (but sometimes not eating at all when she can't figure out what is right to eat), and going to the Dr. She may be trying to do what she should be doing, but I think she may be suffering from depression or something. She will not admit it, but she is having a hard time dealing with becoming a diabetic. She is having mood swings which includes crying. She will not share why she is crying and gets very deffenisve if anyone tries to help.
Is this normal? I have suggested she talk to her Dr. or someone but she wont. She thinks she is coping just fine. I don't have diabetes. I don't know what she is going through to help. How can I get her to join a support group or talk to her Dr. before things get worse.
Diabetes runs in my family and fortunately I have not been diagnosed with it. Sounds like she is doing the right things. Maybe you can help her with meal planning so that it isn't so frustrating for her. I don't know what it is like being diagnosed as a diabetic, but I am sure being told that you have a disease no matter what it is can be depressing. Maybe talk to her doctor privately first. That is the best I can offer for now. Good luck and keep up the good job supporting her.
i think sometimes diabetics can be moody because if there sugar is out of whack. my mother in law has diabetes and one time her eyes were rolling in the back of her head and i was scared and she said she wanted me to take her to caseys for coffee but not in a nice way. she was out of it. she may be having a hard time accepting it as well. diabetes is not fun. i worry about getting it because i am overweight and you have to ***** yourself all the time and watch what you eat and if your really bad diabetic you have to give yourself shots. my dad is on the shots. he is really bad off and i think i am going to lose him soon. he only has 4 years. i would see if there is a way that you can google diabetic recipes. i google recipes all the time. it is amazing what you will find. also sugar free foods are great. they are on the expensive side though. also if you have a book store im sure you could buy a diabetic cook book. also you could call a doctors office and ask what are big no nos to eat. that way you can avoid them. i know some things that are bad. some fruit you have to watch cuz believe it or not it has sugar naturally, hot dogs are bad about it too, i have heard that pasta is bad, donuts, and anything with alot of sugar in it. i dont like splenda though because i have heard it causes cancer. so i stay away from that stuff. i would look for sugar free stuff in the store and look on line for recipes. hope this helps.
