Hi all, I am on a maintenance oxy for a year now. I keep for

Hi all, I am on a maintenance oxy for a year now. I keep forgetting to take it every 6 or less hours and stomach starts burning and churning. Don't know if it helps the pain or not. Just feels like I have to keep feeding a monster within. Thanks for listening. Is this normal?

I do believe it is your body telling you to take the meds. Unfortunately the body becomes dependent on the medication that is required for pain management but if you weren't taking the oxy you would be taking something else so it's really not a big deal. I have been taking them for about 7-8 years now

Ok, thank you, but what happens if your doctor decides to take you off? Do you think they really do still help with the pain?

I've been taking them for years and they continue to take the pain away. I think I felt the way you did about "feeding the monster". So what happens if you stop taking them? Well, you will be in pain again or taking some other medication with most likely horrible side effects, look up the side effects of Oxycodone and you will see they are minimal. Take them as prescribed and you will be fine.

OK thank you jlionsfan, just a couple more q,s, if u don't mind? Do they take away your appetite? And whereabouts are u located? Doesn't have to be exact of course. I understand. Just curious.

Well my name should probably give away as I am A devout Lions Fan. No they do not take my appetite, actually I have put some weight on. Feel free to ask any questions. I am an advocate for using pain medication as prescribed. Once again the side effects of oxycodone or minimal, especially compared to what other medications are out there

Ok, I just can't figure out why I can't eat and I've heard oxy can cause that. I am not sure where or who the Lions are, sorry. I am an avid Sacramento Kings fan. Have you heard of them? TTYL

Hey inkspot- yea I know the Kings. Detroit Lions football. So are you taking Oxycodone or OxyContin? I take 15mg Oxycodone immediate release tablets, what strength are you taking? Maybe you should eat prior to taking the meds, is this something new or did it happen as soon as you started taking the oxycodone?

I take the same as you 15 mg oxycodone (says for roxycodone, whatever that is). I have other major health issues though. Since I had a major operation on my cervical spine April last year it has caused bad flare up of my COPD with pneumonia 3 times and excacerbations so I am fatigued now and in bed a lot. Oxygen 24/7. My dad passed away last year from the same complications. from COPD but he was a lot older and I still have a lot of things I want to do with my life. I remember he didn't want to eat much. I have to fight this thing. The surgeon missed one little part Of an invertebrate in my neck that still presses on a nerve that runs down thru my left hand. Thus the pain, tingling and numbness in my left pinky, ring finger and left side of hand. It is a real constant and irritating pain as you may well know with your arthritis. They are trying acupuncture. My main problem is finding some friend or family member to help me when I go to the hospital and come home or just endure the fatigue at home. Since family is all against me and my friends are gone, I have to rely on my remaining son (oldest 37) to help. He lives with me, off of me and is an addict so there is verbal abuse and neglect. Sorry about dwelling on my issues when I would like to support you and others who my be going thru much worse. Take care and be brave. Rebecca

So I would assume the family is against you for supporting the 37 yr old, that's a tough one. I could sleep all day dealing with the fatigue but I work, as hard as it is but I have a pretty easy career so it's not strenuous on the body. I'm surprised having COPD they would give you oxy because that slows down the respiratory system

@jlionsfan hi there, how are you doing? Yes you are very astute guessing the reason my family is against me but you know if it wasn’t this it would be something else. So many reasons they contradict each other. But I don’t think any reason is enough for ALL of them to completely close me off and never talk to me. And I mean never. Anyway I’m not going to let their issues dictate how I live my life. The oxy level is probably too low for the doctor to worry. Anyway, how is your pain?

Roxicodone is oxycodone without any tylenol. Oxycontin is oxycodone time release. All the same exact basic ingredient though......

Why thank u Harpus, that has cleared up any confusion. No one ever tells u.

There are a certain amount of miligrams per day that simply open the door to habit, dependancy, addiction......I find that around 100mg per day, you're entering a problem zone, and at 150+ a day, you can get pretty bit and have problems getting off. It's very difficult when it comes to people who have serious health issues, operations, spinal problems, serious pain....is this person "addicted"? This is a very tough call. Sure, it's possible to have serious pain.....and also develop a painkiller addiction. There are many people out there who have had to give up addictive substances and find other ways to manage their pain. Only you can look inward and see if it has crossed a line where the opiate addiction is causing more problems than the underlying medical causes. There's a grey area that I've seen over and over.....person has a real, legitimate pain issue.....person uses it as an excuse to keep getting high.....that's a very difficult area.

I'm taking 15 mg of oxy (Roxy) per day. It is for real pain but I don't know how much it's helping. Its been 16 months on them. I don't judge people taking them for pain. Who knows how much they need to help their pain. But I do think it is very addictive if used for long periods. Pretty sure I'm a bona fide addict.

That is a very low dose. 15mg a day at worst would make you a bit uncomfortable for a few days and nights. You can stop 15mg a day cold turkey with almost no issues. But......go down to 10mg a day, then 7.5, then 5..... and you will hardly even notice it. To compare, I have flirted with snorting 100-150mg per day. That was a week of hell to stop cold turkey, but with say, 3-4mg of suboxone a day for a week, then weening off, it was ok.......

That is not true for me. I have pretty strong physical symptoms if I don't take a pill every 6 hours. Its not mental because I forget lots of times and start getting punished. Maybe if I snorted it would be different? But I can tell you it will not be easy to get off these things but I do need to take them now for pain and maybe into the unforeseeable future.

I'm only going by the laws of physics and reality. Even if you weighed 110 pounds and were very sensitive to opiates, 15mg of oxycodone a day is a very mild dose.

I have a friend who was taking a few too many vocodins a day, maybe a total of 25mg a day. For the last 5 YEARS he has been taking 16mg a DAY of suboxone. He is a zombie, dulled, does nothing, is completely hooked on suboxone, and is now suffering the results of trying to kill a fly with a bazooka.

15mg a day of oxycodone doesn't call for any suboxone whatsoever. That is simply way too little. I'm not saying that you are trying to use suboxone to get off of oxycodone, I didn't mean to go down that road, I'm just trying to show you that 15mg a day of oxy is a very minimal dose and you would be fine physically to basically stop that amount at any time.

@Harpua I only know my experience and you seem to have been thru a lot more. I remember What it was like when not too long after surgery when I was taking maybe 25-30 mg/day and my dad’s caregiver stole my oxy, my son got some Percocet for me on the street my withdrawals were so bad. Its all a matter of perception and sensitivity it seems. What’s bad for me may be not so bad for you if you are used to a lot more. Btw my son is into heroin, snorting not injecting. He lives with me so it is hard sometimes. But that’s another group. I do appreciate your input. Not a subject others will talk about or even understand

Hi inkspot, how are things going?

At the end of the day, pretty much, all opiates are the same. It mostly cones down to how many milligrams one is taking and how often. Tokerance, biochemistry weight, etc. also factor in.

Codeine may be at the weak end if the scale, and heroin at the strong end, but the results are basically the same. Once someone is consuming a certain amount of opiates regularly, the addiction door is open.

Most people who play with your average painlillers, like vicodin, are sort of stopped by the Tylenol in them. In order to cross the line to addiction with 5mg percodans, one would have to take 10. 20 pills a day and that usually makes people ill.

Once someone gets the same painlillers without the tylenol......now you can take 100, 150 MG a day or more. This is how people easily cross the line to heroin. If you crush up an 80mg oxycontin tablet, you are getting basically the same, concentrated very strong blast of opiate as you might get from say, a $20 bag of heroin. In fact, the oxy is better because it's cleaner, and absolutely predictable. But the heroin cost 1/10th the price....
