Hi, I'm new here. I've been given a choice to have radioact

Hi, I'm new here. I've been given a choice to have radioactive iodine or stay on anti-thyroid and heart drugs. Have any of you heard of any negative long term side effects of radioactive iodine? I've heard of the potential for eye problems, but my eyes are under control and I'm confident that is not a concern if I have the treatment while my eyes are still in good shape. I'm 49 years old and it doesn't look like I'll have any more remissions. I had some while I was younger, but its been a few years now I've had it and the medications are helping me with some symptoms (such as my eyes, thankfully), but not others. My endocrinologist recommended the treatment, but I have appointments scheduled with my primary care doctor and my ob/gyn in a few weeks. I'm going to ask them their opinions, but if anyone else has an opinion, I'd love to hear from you. If anyone's interested, I can let you know what my other doctors tell me. Thanks!

does anyone have any experience with this? I am very sorry you are going through this. hugs, and best of luck!

I have Graves’ disease and one of my eye has been affected. I’m 51 now, and the eye thing still bothers me and makes me insecure. My endocrinologist told me a study was done at the Mayo Clinic and people who are having issue with their eye or eyes, will get worse if radio iodine is done. It took me quite a few months to find a endocrinologist I liked. I would recommend an ocular plastic surgeon because if surgery is necessary, they are the ones with all of the experience. Luckily my eye isn’t bad enough for surgery, and hopefully never will be. I’m hoping for your daughter the meds will kick in and the eyes will get better.
