Hi debbie880, You can quit cold turkey. You can also see your doctor for help. Maybe try cutting down on the cigarettes you smoke doing it daily or weekly until you quit.
Here are a few links that may be helpful:

Take it one day at a time. When you quit, think of yourself as a nonsmoker. Keep us posted on how you are doing. We are here for you. ((((hugs))))
out of the last ten years - i have probably been quit for at least three +/-. it a progressive drug, even if it is four a day does it ever go less for any stretch of time or always a few more. something happens that's rough and then a pack. the only time i really feel good is when it's cold turkey and i have no intention to ever do it again. it takes a good practice to stay that way but it's the only way for it not to be a battle and actually be a transformative experience - i want to be the person that i could never be while addicted to nicotine. i do - it is just a much better person. and from that perspective, and the first three days of cold turkey are challenging don't get me wrong, cold turkey just gets you to a better place.
don't look back - all i got going is a week and i have been here before but way too many times from just effort and grit and not from perspective but for me the thing to remember is that when i am really ready to be genuine about it, just one time is much more crushing and a lot different than when it was just in the car, or on weekends or whatever, if you know when you are going to get it, there can be some control, but a quit is zero and just one can be dramatic and hard to control.

Have you tried reading the Easy Way to Quit Smoking by Allen Carr? it helps reframe your thinking about smoking. If you're only smoking 4 a day you're pretty much in withdrawal mode all the time. Stop torturing yourself. I know it's hard but you can do it!!
