its very difficult i try to test my self like ok u touchd this u dnt need to wash ur hand but i always end up washin them anywayss
I have OCD and Im here for you, we can make a change and get better together.
Welcome Brittany,
I just want to say I can detect the desperation in your text and boy have I been there!!!! I started experiencing some of my worse symptoms when I was your age and I was really frightened. I was in college and found myself hiding my OCD as often as I could. I understand the way OCD makes you feel like you can't do anything and you can't pursue your dreams. It makes you fall victim to its prey. Now I am almost 44 years old and I am having another episode of this in my life! It had gotten so much better for so long and it is tormenting me at this time in my life. I want you to draw close to those people who do support you and make you feel valued. Hopefully, your parents will come around.
Gina
Hey Brittany.
I know exactly how it feels to not have your parents believe you.
So I told them that I think I have OCD. They laughed then told me I was stupid, selfish & attention seeking.
I have a dog who is 11 years of age. Two years ago, when she was 9, I began tapping the fridge 9 times each time I opened it then closed it. I also check the front & back door is locked 9 times (now 11 times because of her age) because I'm worried something will happen.
According to my parents, I'm not OCD so until then, obviously I'm 'normal.'
I hope your parents come round soon enough. I know exactly how you feel on that note though.
Brittany and ConfusedGirl17 .... there is help out there. Also, you are two are not alone when it comes to your families not believing you.
I am not familiar with all the causes of OCD but I have learned in my case it stems from PTSD I suffer from. Hence, there is an underlying cause for it.
Brittany .... it will be easier for you to get help since you are 19. You are of your own free will to seek out professionals that can help you. You may not have the financial resources for who you will find in the Yellow Pages, but there is help out there. :)
If you need help in locating financially feasible resources in your area, please let us know and let us know what State you are in. I am sure one of us can compile a list for you to pursue. Where I live, the County has an excellent mental health program and many facilities.
Also, there are many private groups out there who have outreach programs. In fact, I have one professional who treats me for sooooooo little (free) because she knows I spend a huge part of my life volunteering to help others.
ConfusedGirl17 .... it is great that you recognize you are having an issue. My family said pretty much the same things to me and they pulled me out of Mental Health program. That was truly devastating because I soooo needed it. And, when I turned 18 they threw me out because of it.
If you can't convince them to help you and that you really need it, please hold on to hope that there are resources out there for you too.
Good Luck to the both of you!
Hey everyone
It's so great to meet you all.
I too have OCD and depression and have had it my whole life.
Right now it is all under great control with the use of SSRI antidepressants. Without this medication i was unable to work, socialise or have relationships.
My main advice that i give every OCD sufferer, mainly becasue it really really does work is, if you arent already on an SSRI, then you should get on one quickly.
Furthermore, if you take your SSRI with a daily dose of folic acid, you'll get an even greater effect from it.
If your doctor hasnt told you any of this, then he deserves to be shot. Get a different doctor. There is help out there, you do not need to suffer in silence for the rest of your life.
Love you all !!
