Hi Jenn,
I don't know how far you've gotten with your education nor do I know if you'd like to learn more so that you can become more employable. However, if you would like to return to school, you need to be aware of a fantastic resource that is available to you.
Under federal law, every state in the union has to have a department that is usually called "Vocational Rehabilitation". This department will usually be a part of the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education. Their only job is to help those with any kind of disability return to school.
As a part of the services they perform, they will evaluate you for disabilities. If they find anything, including a learning disability such as you have, they will provide for you any kind of assistance you need to get you back into school. For some people, that may mean a wheelchair, while for others, it may mean a seeing eye dog. In my case, they helped me with my vision problems by providing me with new glasses and other devices to help me see better. They also purchased two (2) new hearing aids for me at a cost of $4,800.00. For you, they would probably get you into some sort of program that would help you learn how to work around your disability. I can't really tell you how that would work since there are so many different learning disabilities, and each one is handled a bit differently. But I had people in school with me who were being treated for dyslexia and other learning disabilities, and they were able to function very, very well. Vocational Rehabilitation really came through for them.
In addition, you need to be aware that there have been some fairly recent changes in the law. Now, all schools, public and private, are required by law to provide adequate accommodations for those with disabilities. This might mean that you will be given extra time to complete exams, or it may mean that all of your exams will need to be given orally. The schools can also be required to provide a note taker for you if taking class notes is a problem for you. So, between the extra attention you'll get to help you overcome or work around your disability, the schools are now required by law to make accommodations for you. This is indeed a great time to be alive if you have any sort of disability.
If you would be interested in exploring your options, either to finish high school, go on to a trade or technical school, or go on to college and graduate school, then contact your state's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. That's where you'll probably find Vocational Rehabilitation. In my case, in addition to providing the new eyeglasses and hearing aids, this agency also paid for 100% of my tuition and the cost of my books. They also provided me with a monthly subsidy for living expenses and transportation costs. And they covered these expenses for my Bachelor's Degree, my Master's Degree, and my Doctorate. They were with me every step of the way.
So, if you'd like to return to school, contact Vocational Rehabilitation. But even if you don't want to return to school, contact Vocational Rehabilitation anyway. They have programs established for folks who aren't returning to school, folks who need help to just function a little bit better in this old world. Either way you go, Vocational Rehabilitation should be able to help you. Good luck!!
