If I "give in" to the tough emotions and sense of weight, does that mean I don't want to be happy?

All these emotions are normal. If you give in and give yourself a chance to feel them, it will help you process them and work on healing. Just don't let them take over completely and make you be someone you dont want to be.

I no longer know what "let them take over completely" means exactly. When I feel very intense regret, fear, sorrow . . . . I start to panic and become fearful. I want to hope that I will experience happiness and joy again, but I start doubting that the longer and deeper this goes.

The emotions are intense for sure! It is all still normal. Maybe try some coping skills like writing out the feelings.
