This speaks a bit to a recent post about 'breaking the cycle', but specifically with regards to interrupting bingeing and purging. This cycle seems to be more of a cognitive focus (in the moment) rather than an emotional one, although the connection is strong.
Three practical strategies for interrupting this can include:
1)DELAY acting on the urges to binge and purge.
2)DISTRACT away from troublesome thoughts and urges.
3)ENGAGE in alternative behaviors that can break the chain of thought...such as leaving the house to go for a walk, making telephone calls to friends, listening to music, or even watching television.
Changing the focus in the moment is the first step. How you do that can be YOUR choice.
I would love to hear from any of you who have found ways to practice this strategy!!

I think #3 was the biggest help for me. :) I used to be triggered just by walking into my house after work. When I stopped going home right after work, instead going for a walk or running errands or to the gym, I was able to break that cycle. Of course, since I wasn't in therapy, this habit of burning calories instead of consuming them became equally addictive... So... Therapy! A must!! ♥

I agree, #3 is most helpful to me as well. I get triggered when I am in the kitchen area alone, so I try to avoid that area and instead read a book or watch TV elsewhere in the house until I feel like I can manage being around all the food.
