YES!
The following factors have been determined to contribute the most to the quality of treatment provided by therapists treating eating disorders. (Adapted from Rie et al., 2008, International Journal of Eating Disorders, 41, 307-317)
-Being respected
-Learning to take your own responsibility
-Learning how to eat normally
-Focus on recovering weight
-Focus on improving your body image
-Being taken seriously
-Trust in therapist
-Explanation of information on EDs
-Keeping a(n) (eating) diary
-Being able to talk about eating behaviors
-Treatment that addresses the person.....
When these specifics were ranked by both therapists and patients, the results showed that therapists placed the highest priority on behavioral change and eating disorder symptoms, while patients stressed the importance of the therapeutic relationship, and the need to address problems underlying the eating disorder.
I plan to write more about the important 'specialities' of working with eating disordered patients.
I so agree with those patients that said that the most important thing in treatment of ED's is the theraputic relationship and addressing the underlying problems!! I could not even begin to recover until I found someone I truly trusted and respected. For me it was a dietitian that had actually been in treatment with me and had found recovery herself. I felt she "got" it and I could talk to her about my fears without feeling like I was being judged. I never made much progress in all the other treatment relationships I had prior to meeting her and thus was stuck in the horrible ED cycle.
Thanks for sharing Jan. You always have the best information to pass on.
Harry,
Thank you for your input. I think these are the kinds of things that can help us think about what we need and what helps the most.
Take care...Jan ♥
do you have to go to a live in facility for recovery from an ed i mean i really want to go but the whole reason im getting over this is so i can actually live life not put it on hold any more im just wondering because i want help but i dont see a need to be a live in if schitzophranics and bipolars dont have to then i shouldnt i dont now im just scared im scared that im starting a new ed and im scared they wont help me without making me a live in
acousti....good question! Some people are able to get the help they need on an outpatient basis, depending on how long they have been sick, if they are medically unstable, and other factors. But it's very hard to interrupt a chaotic and dangerous eating (or not eating) pattern without some type of intervention, such as going into treatment. I will never say it's impossible, but I will say that having that help can make recovery faster and more complete, based on what I have seen.
I realize you want to live your life...and that is why taking a short amount of time to TRULY get the help you need is the best way to live your life! The amount of time spent in treatment is a relatively short amount of time in the whole scheme of things. NOT getting the help you need could mean you are not able to live your life at all. Truly.
Getting professional help is critical. What level you need can be determined by having an assessment by a professional who is trained to treat eating disorders.
Please get the help you need...like you said, you don't want this ED to take any more of your life!
Take care...Jan ♥

what questions do i need to ask when i am selecting a counseler or whatever like i was thinking do yall do eating disorders i dont know that sounds like a weird question but oklahoma seems like they dont give a **** about mental health so eds may not seem important to them i dont know i just need to know what to ask and what to expect im just really curious i guess and scared and dont know how to go about this ive told my family and friends isnt that suppose to be the hardest part well this is way harder im really having some anxiety here
you can go to your GP and ask for referral to an ed specialist surly there an ed specialist in your area you can always look in the phone book under treatment or eating disorder in know we have a couple # in are its worth a try but i would still go ask your doctor best of luck

no i havent done anything yet i have to call them tommorow and i know its like a hospital ive been inpatient for my depression when i was a teen thats why im so scared they locked me up and wouldnt let me out for no reason other than to keep me there i have to call the place tommorow they are only open mon thru fri i quess which kind of seems weird to me i dont even know if they deal with eds yet
Please don’t go into an inpatient situation unless they have a reputable (ask me about it) program for the treatment of eating disorders. Otherwise, the only time you need true hospitalization for the treatment of an ED is if you medically unstable for any one of a variety of reasons. A general psych ward is never a good option, unless you are suicidal and an acute risk to yourself or others.
My own experience years ago on a psych ward was much more harmful than helpful, and I have heard numerous others say the same thing.
Depending on your location and your insurance (or ability to pay), you should have some options for good treatment available. If you are unable to locate anything, let me know, and I can check into options for you.
Hang on…Jan
I don't believe they could keep you inpatient for an eating disorder against your will unless you were suicidal or medically unstable. Jan will be able to tell you. :) Yes, ask if they are specialized in eating disorders, and if not, can they help you find someone that is. There is a site where you can check this info, too. Again, Jan would know. Don't freak out about inpatient yet... Yes, you might need that. But you never know... Everyone's different. The important thing now is to get the assessment and see what the professionals think. Then we can help you with your next step. ♥
Jen...and others...yes, as an adult, no one can keep you hospitalized unless you are proven to be a danger to yourself or others, either physically or psychologically. There is the issue of guardianship, which can be obtained by an adult's family member(s), if the person's life is at stake and they refuse treatment. But I don't hear you describing such a situation. There are many options for help. Please take care in choosing where to go. An assessment is the first step, and then you can decide.
Wishing you the best....Jan ♥
