Oils for Healthy Hair

I am a huge believer in certain oils helping hair's health; therefore, I found this article to be incredibly helpful;

"Are you on the receiving end of all the scolding for not applying hair oil? If yes, then the advice is that you listen to the advice. Hair oil are food for your hair, which ensures healthy hair i.e devoid of problems like hair loss, dandruff etc. There are a lot of oils of different brands available in the market and meeting your requirements there is also the non-sticky oils. But experts say it is best to stick on to traditional essential oils for your hair. Lets look at some of the essential hair oils and their uses-

1.Coconut Oil – Used from the time of our Grandmothers, it is still the most effective oil for hair. The main work of coconut oil is to calm the scalp and thus, treat the hair of all the harsh effects of pollution and sun rays. A slightly heated coconut oil is best for head massage. Hair dye's are also harsh on hair due to the presence of chemicals and applying of coconut oil treats it effectively.

2.Castor Oil – Castor oil is the best solution to dry scalp. It works as a moisturiser and enhances hair growth and treats thinning hair. It is best to leave castor oil on the scalp overnight and rinse the scalp with shampoo in the morning. If this procedure is followed once a week, within a months time you will notice hair growth and change in the quality of your hair...."

I've heard that about Castor Oil taking it internally YUK!!!!!! Can maybe choke it down w/some lemon :(.... BUT wasnt aware you could put it in your hair Hummmmmmm.....thanks pup

Hi April, a couple of my friends have turned me on to putting oils in my hair as a deep repair and nourishing treatment and it really makes all of the difference in the world. I love it. I'll put it in my hair and then put a warm towel over my head so that it really soaks in.

What if one has highlights in their hair does it mess that up????? & Are you using Castor Oil in your hair now or other types oils???? Lord knows I cant get enough information from the fountain of youth.... :)

Hi April, I have highlights and I've been using both olive oil and neem oil. Neither one has affected my color whatsoever. If anything, it's made it more brilliant, as my hair's more shiny and healthy looking, rather than dull and dry. I purchased the neem oil at a health food store and bought it based on the recommendation of my friend [who received the recommendation from her hair stylist]. My friend's hair has transformed from dull and dry to shiny and bouncy. It's stunning. Though be warned, it doesn't smell very pleasant; therefore, use it at home and use it minimally. I'll only use the neem every once in a while, though the olive oil at least once per week.

Oh, OK, I was a lil concerned so now I'll write this down & try it out one day, thanks for the advanced warning about the smell that oughta be interesting lol.

Thanks again & take care of you.

April

Also, I usually don't put any oil near the roots because that area produces oil naturally, so I soak my ends as my hair's the driest there.

Well I'm older so hair does a very strange drying thing & the greys have a mind of their own (sorry to tell you that about aging :-)) so I can probably put it near my roots, I dont blow dry anymore as that just trashes my hair now. What amount do you use???? Teaspoon?

Thanks hon.

April, I am right there with you on the grays and dry hair. My mom went gray very young and I inherited that fabulous gene. So, I'm blessed with a head of gray thus needing to color to cover it up. As well, I've done my fair share of damage over the years...from perms to color to highlights to straightening. My poor hair. I'm trying to stop the blow drying and straightening now, because it's just doing way more harm than good.

I use approximately a teaspoon of oil, I'll pour it into the palm of my hands, rub them together, and then throughout my hair. Add more as necessary. It should soak the ends of your hair so that you don't feel the dryness any longer. For an even better result, take a warm towel and wrap it around your head.

April, I have to share...I had the oil in my hair for 24 hours. I was able to do so because I work from home and work a hat with my hair pulled in a low bun when I'd walk outside. I washed it and let it dry naturally and it looks so healthy and shiny. Mind you, it was looking pretty dull and dry pre-treatment. So, I'm excited by the results.

Leave in 24hrs....so I guess I'll be washing pillowcases more often huh. Do you notice an immediate difference when your NOT using these products or run out of them? Thats probably a silly questions.

I actually never get any on my pillow cases because it soaks into my hair and it's really not necessary to leave it on that long. My hair really needed a boost, so I thought to really let it process. I actually do notice that my hair looks more dull and dry when I don't do a treatment. I've gotten into the habit of doing it at least once per month, because I also color treat my hair and that takes its toll.

I have extremely thin hair with diffuse balding areas. I shaved it all off at the end of Jan so that I could do some intense daily oil massages in high hopes that I could have my hair back. It is now mid March and there is still a great deal of scalp showing thru the hair, so in my own case, it is just a case of female pattern baldness and I have now lost all hope of having a full head of hair ever again.

I have gone to a few website for nice head coverings and that will now have to be my new signature look.

SistahKat, thank you for being here and for sharing with us. Have you tried natural hair supplements? I went through a very tough phase with my hair and I bore you with all of the details, but it took almost 1.5 years for me to get it to an almost healthy state. What helped me the most was taking natural hair supplements from the health food store? It takes a lot of patience when working with natural supplements. As well, I did try topical solutions (Rogaine) for a few months and I noticed re-growth. I think that it was the combination of methods that got me to this point, where my hair feels thicker and healthier. Please always consult your doctor before considering any treatments, such as the ones I sited above.
