RE: PTSD DOGS. I am looking into the possibility of getting a service dog that specializes in ptsd. A few people have messaged me saying they were quite interested in this topic, so I thought I would start posting updates. Here's the first one.
I met a woman who is involved in animal care in rural communities (like on reserves, etc). I expressed to her an interest in becoming a dog trainer, and she introduced me to another woman who is a professional trainer. It also so happens she trains PTSD dogs for a Citadel Foundation. It's like our meeting was meant to be! She introduced me to the founder of Citadel and I spoke with him in length on Friday. Here's a bit about Citadel. They were created a couple of years ago and provide PTSD dogs to veterans and emergency responders, free of charge! He has matched people with dogs across the country. They will train your existing dog, or they will find a suitable dog for you. They like to use rescues, however sometimes a breeder will approach them with a donation of a pup. They train the dog and then train the person who is getting the dog. Part of the process will be weekly training sessions, once we are matched, to ensure everything is going well. They also provide ongoing support and training. I asked if it was in the realm of possibilities to have a dog by July, and he said it was possible! Apparently, many of the barriers that clients face, I don't have to worry about. As an example, one of there best trainers is less than an hour away (the lady I already met). I clearly meet their criteria (I just need a letter from my psychiatrist and probably proof of my profession). There is another person from my profession in my area, who has been matched with a dog already. I'm hoping he will get in touch (confidentiality means Brian can't tell me who it is, but I plan to ask Brian to invite him to contact me). The conversation ended with me describing the type of dog I would like, and Brian saying he'll start shopping for a dog. I'll keep posting as things unfold. If you have any questions, let me know. I don't pretend to know the all the answers, but I will try to find out for you. Your question will probably be something I should be asking anyways, so it will help me out!
