Was diagnosed with Graves Disease in August of last year. Since then I have been on Methimazole and my levels have since fluctuated from normal to high based on the dosages. Currently my t4 levels seem to be at a good spot after my last blood test . But my eyes show no difference. In fact, I would say they have become much more puffy and swollen. I feel that I look ridiculous and my confidence has pretty much plummeted to nothing. Many of my other symptoms seem to have abated but not my eyes. I have always had big and prominent eyes.. but now they look like I haven't slept in months. Is there any hope I will ever look normal again? I can feel myself falling towards depression and it sucks. Thank you for listening. I feel pretty alone in this.
Is it a cosmetic issue or is your doctor concerned as well?
I continue to get blood taken every 6 weeks. My doctor doesn't seem to be too concerned.. yet. I also see an eye doctor every few months to get tests. Both have told me that it should be temporary and things should start to improve. I haven't seen any improvement and it's been months. I'm so frustrated. My doc also talks about the next step often and that I have a decision to eventually make which is either kill the thyroid radioactively or by surgery. Anyone have any advice? Everything I have read about Methimazole is that it is fairly mild and even prescribed to pregnant women. So I don't know to continue as is or deal and have my thyroid killed or removed. I just want to improve and get my life back.
