Why you won't always lose weight if you exercise lots

I truly believe that in order to lose weight and maintain it, you have to combine exercise with a good healthy diet, and that's exactly what this article covers;

"Most people think that if they just exercise a lot, they will automatically start dropping weight. While one may drop a few pounds, it will not have the desired effect that most people desire. When you plan to lose weight, exercising is only one part of a whole that you need to do. Let’s explore a few reasons why people don’t lose weight just by exercising.

Poor eating habits are the number one reason why people don’t lose weight just exercising. After a good workout, you can’t mess it up by thinking “since I exercised, I can get away with a little more of this or that.” You don’t have to become a vegetarian, but you do have to eat more of the things that are healthier for your body such as fruits and vegetables. Portion control can go a long way in helping you lose weight as well as not eating late at night.

No intensity during workouts. When you work out for weight loss, the goal is to get your metabolism rate up so that your body will burn more calories. If you are not getting your intensity levels high, you won’t have the dramatic loss in weight you are looking for. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to work out for long periods of time to achieve high intensity, you just have to push your body to it.

Drink more water. If you drink more water and less juice and soft drinks, your body will get rid of the excess sugar that is stored in your body resulting in weight loss. Water is very important to the body and will help maintain not only a healthy weight but also your sugar level.

Change up your routine. It’s great that you are exercising but if you continue with the same exercise not only will it stop being effective, you will also be more prone to injure yourself. Not changing up your routine will result in that dreadful phrase in the fitness world known “hitting the plateau.” Remember that to lose the most weight, you have to exercise the whole body not just a portion.

Get a good night’s rest. A lot of people overlook this but getting a good nights sleep is important to your health. You should be getting between 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Believe it or not, getting the right amount of sleep will help suppress your appetite.

Losing weight is more than just exercising. It entails taking care of the body as whole. Just like anything else in life, how much care you put into maintain a healthy weight is what you’re going to get out."

So this is whats worked for me...

1) GYM exercise - walking then jogging

2) eliminated fats and sugars - drinks, sweets, fried etc

3) portion control - focused heavily on size, two hands placed side by side.

4) supplements - multivitamins, fish oil, protein shakes

5) Recovery - WATER, 64 oz per day, i use empty 64 oz apple juice containers and fill them with water or green tea!! works like a CHARM. and then, SLEEP. 8-10 hours... so go to sleep at 10p or 11p!!

6) Psychological support - seek out like minded ideas, people, websites, read, post reminders up.. CHANGE IT ALL... dont think about it just move and do it...really

7) Focused on Process more than destination - staying on routine, driving to gym, ignoring negative or counterproductive thought in favor of the moment, teh present (im gonna fail...replaced with i just gotta get to that treadmill right now)

8) have a plan - i mean with regards to working out.. have a blueprint of what you should do every day...month, i hired a $600 trainer.. yea too much but that kind of investment meant to me i had to spend it well)

9) when working out.. DO IT RIGHT. form is everything.. focus on doing exercises the right way.. READ, go to YOUTUBE.com its loaded with GREAT visual advice, go to website like www.workoutbox.com and get great instruction !!

so this works for me but its a struggle with the mental part of it, especially when i dont have anyone to share this with. but, im focusing on PROCESS..just going. i can still worry all i want but at the gym.

ALSO, eating right is TOUGH. i still havent mastered the RIGHT foods although i know not to eat the wrong ones.

the result is weight loss and sustained weight loss for nearly 2 years now.

I have a question about calorie intake. . . does anyone know just how many calories you need on a day to day basis when you're working out. I'm 21 years old, 5'4", 135 lbs. I know right now I'm at 1400 calorie level I believe since I haven't started my workouts regularly, but how much should that increase as I start working out more? I want to weight 120, which was my happiest weight before I had my son. Thanks so much for posting your knowledge on healthy eating. It's good to hear input.

You're absolutely right. A big part of it is diet. In fact, I think diet does more than exercise in the weight loss journey. Good article. :)
