World COPD day november 19th

world copd day is coming up, and studies show quitting smoking best way to slow copd:

"Nov. 19 is World COPD Day, and health care professionals are hoping to let people breathe a little easier with a few facts about the disease and how to detect it.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a long-term lung disease often caused by smoking. The disease includes both chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Many people with COPD have both.

Your airways branch out inside your lungs like an upside-down tree. At the end of each branch are small, balloon-like air sacs. In healthy people, both the airways and air sacs are springy and elastic. When you breathe in, each air sac fills with air like a small balloon. The balloon deflates when you exhale. If you have COPD, your airways and air sacs lose their shape and become floppy, like a stretched-out rubber band.

COPD makes it hard for you to breathe, and the first symptom is often coughing up mucus. Other common warning signs of COPD may include:

• having a cough that won’t go away;

• feeling short of breath, particularly when you’re physically active;

• producing a wheezing sound when you breathe;

• having a feeling of tightness in the chest.

Cigarette smoking is the most common cause of COPD in 85 to 90 per cent of people. The best way to prevent COPD is to not start smoking or to quit smoking."
