Any suggestions for a second opinion for follicular lymphoma. Would Mayo's be a good choice? If so, which location?
I am very new at this, since I have just been diagnosed. However, being that this is a very tricky disease to diagnose as there are 31 different kinds of NHL, I think it is vitally important to go for a second opinion from a Lymphoma Specialist. I live in the Metro NY area, so I went to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC and had a second opinion from their NHL Specialist. I guess where you go would depend on where you live. But there is no question, a second opinion is important. Remember, most oncologist/hemotologists treat many kinds of cancer, they can't be experts in all of them. My oncologist/hemotologist received a written report from the specialist, and she is going with her recommendation. Good luck as you embark on this journey with me, and all the rest of us!
Second opinions on a lymphoma diagnosis are absolutely critical. Check out the support tip on second opinions at this site. Granted, B-cell lymphomas like FL are much easier than T-cell lymphomas to diagnose, that doesn't mean you should assume that an FL dx is above reproach.
Finally if you're referring to the Mayo Clinic, it doesn't matter which location. The Mayo Clinic is an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, meaning that there, you will find the kinds of blood pathologists who have extensive experience in lymphomas.
