How do you handle dinnertime with an allergy-prone child?
Do you make them an entirely different meal?
Do you only substitute the main ingredient and serve it to all at the table?
Do you fix two different main entrees (say beef is served, but you also fix fish or chicken for the one allergic to the beef)?
In my home, it can vary. If it's a beef night, I might sub chicken for a beef meal. Or I can fix a small serving of the chicken and the main meat, beef in a larger portion for the other family members.
There are some things where we buy "treats" in both red and whatever other flavor/color that does NOT contain Red Dye 40, so that my child doesn't feel left out.
And with some things, we just avoid buying certain foods, or certain allergy-ingredient-containing food, as to not ACCIDENTALLY have her get to it. Either by her hands, or by ours.
Hello, I have a 17 month old daughter that has a peanut/tree nut/egg allergy. I make food to work for her, you must always make her food 1st, so it does'nt get contaminated with the other food you cook for the other family members, she also made me eat a little healtier, at that age kids tend to ask for everything they see the parents eat, so nomore sweets, unless it's something I baked for her, which is a good thing. Breakfast was the hardest for me, I been eating oatmeal daily with her all kinds of ways, I'm starting to the hang of it, from some help off here, I'm glad I signed up last week cause it really helped me alot, I got alot of ideas on more breakfast foods, It was getting depressing to me, I felt like I did something worng to my baby, I try to keep her away from others, I don't want anyone to touch her with something on there hands and make her sick. I hope this helped you, take care of your special angel.....
Hello!!
My nephew is just over two with multiple food allergies (nuts, soy, wheat, gluten, and more)... He is a very picky eater (he is a little cautious with trying new food), he is still breastfeeding and he has a couple baby foods that he likes, but it is hard to get him to eat anything else.
We still try to avoid any of his allergens in the household though. We figure that it is safer to avoid cross contamination, after seeing a couple allergic reactions from a birthday cake, and pistachios we try to be as cautious as possible.
It takes some adjusting but I think it is possible to create meals and treats the whole family will enjoy while keeping everyone safe, but it can seem like a lot of work at first.
Do you have a lot of food allergies in your family, and is it more than one person with different allergies?
My son has a lot of food allergies. Peanuts, tomatoes, oats and he's lactose intolerant. After hearing that most people say Oh my what DOES he eat?! And its simple, we all eat about the same thing. He has his lactose free milk and special breads but other than that I have learned to make everything homemade. Box food does not exist in my home....it can't. If im making breaded chicken, my son has seasoned chicken instead. If we have eggs for breakfast I make the imitation eggs for him so he still has the same food. My kids are young (1 and 2) and don't always understand why we changed what we eat. I found lactose free icecream and chocolate sauce. People worry that their children will misout on things because of allergies and it doesn't have to be that way. I do and I don't make separate meals. It depends on the food honestly. But I try to make it look as similar to what I have as possible and I usually eat what he eats just in case he tries to eat mommy's food. Hope that helped and good luck.
