Driving Phobia

I have an extreme fear of driving on highways and bridges. Has anyone ever experienced this and if so how do you manage the anxiety?

I do! I have driven all my life with no problems but in the last two years I have developed a fear of driving on the highway and bridges. Once I was on the highway and felt like I was going to pass out, which made me avoid them even more. I do not want to seek out a therapist but may have to because now I am feeling anxious just driving home

I understand how you feel MosaicMick. I used to love driving, but can no longer drive, even short distances. Every time I move, I have to get used to the new area before I can drive. But now I am not driving at all.
I met a woman who didn't drive for 1 1/2 years, and finally got help. She said the medication, Zanex really helped. She started driving almost immeditately, although at first someone had to be with her, and she always bought her medications with her. Eventually she was able to drive by herself, on highways, too! She no longer takes the medication. She swears by it.

Has anybody ever taken Zanex?

Hello, I've definitely experienced this. However, mine was due to an accident on a highway. I've always had anxiety when driving over bridges... whenever I'm stuck in traffic and it lands me on a bridge I use my calming mantra, "Breathe & Breathe Again" it's helped so much that I've actually had it tattooed on me, and now I just have to put my hand on over the tattoo and it gives me the strength to not panic!

I hate highway driving! I have to do it sometimes for my job, in a 14 passenger van, while 14 school age children are in the back. Luckily, my kiddos know that I have some highway anxiety and they are really awesome when I drive..I just remember to breathe and relax. I have to remind myself not to white knuckle the steering wheel and just relax.
