Need advice on prevention of mouth sores

I've been hearing about the mouth sores and the nurse who gave me the orientation before starting the chemo yesterday, said if you have mouth sores, that means it's in your esophogus and stomach. Is there a way to prevent this? She mentioned a mouthwash called 'biotene'? Any information you can give me will be appreciated. This sounds painful and also, I don't want to get an infection from it.

Here is a web site I found www.dana-farber.org. I hope this is of help to you and that you are doing ok.

Thank you, I'll check it out!

Biotene is an over the counter mouthwash, gum, or gel for drymouth etc. Go to biotene.com and you can also download a coupon.

Saline and biotene. I washed my mouth after every meal/ non water drink. Rinsed with salt water and then with biotene.
I got ulcers after my first cycle of chemo. Gel Clair relieved my pain - and that was it.
I brushed my teeth as usual with a soft tooth brush.

I did the same as 'BeingHappy' and rinsed after every meal, and whenever I thought of it... pretty much all the time. It really helped dry the sores up. Also, I got some 'magic mouth wash' from my dentist. It's actually a prescription mixed at the pharmacy of Benadryl, Maalox and Lideacaine. This was great to use once or twice a day. Helped with the pain and dried the sores very quick.

Hang in there.

Thank you for all the suggestions and advice. So far, so good. I've been brushing my teeth after every meal and staying hydrated. One thing I wasn't prepared for was constipation!! Never had that happen before in my life!! I was even eating watermelon and fruit, it didn't help. Now I'm taking stool softener and that is working good. Thank you for being there everyone!! I've said it before, this site is awesome, so glad to have it to refer back on.
